A seasonal laboratory metric
SEER2 describes cooling output relative to electricity consumed across a defined laboratory test procedure. It helps compare matched systems under the same rules. It does not predict your exact bill because weather, thermostat settings, ducts, charge, airflow, and house load differ.
Do not compare unlike labels casually
SEER and SEER2 come from different test procedures. When comparing an old nameplate to a new proposal, treat the relationship as an estimate and use an energy model or contractor calculation when the price premium is large.
Installation quality protects the rating
Correct equipment matching, airflow, duct leakage, refrigerant charge, line-set requirements, controls, and commissioning influence field performance. Ask how the contractor will measure these items and what startup data you will receive.
Buy the total outcome
A higher rating may add comfort, quieter operation, better dehumidification, or incentives. Compare the incremental installed price with modeled savings and non-energy benefits instead of assuming the biggest number is automatically best.
