Sequence can change equipment size

Air sealing, attic insulation, window shading, and duct improvements can reduce peak load. If those projects are definite, complete them before the final load calculation when possible. Otherwise the new HVAC system may be selected for a house that no longer exists.

Start with moisture and safety

Resolve roof leaks, bulk water, unsafe wiring, recessed-light clearance, bath exhaust problems, combustion-safety issues, and vermiculite or other suspect materials before burying an attic under insulation. Building durability comes before R-value.

Use an audit to target work

A qualified audit can combine utility history, visual inspection, blower-door testing, infrared observations, duct testing, and combustion safety. The goal is not to maximize insulation everywhere; it is to find the improvements that reduce load safely and cost-effectively.

Recalculate, then select

After confirmed envelope work, update the load calculation and equipment selection. Keep both the improvement scope and the final HVAC assumptions so later owners and contractors understand why the system was sized that way.
